Vintage Hollywood 1940s Autograph Book

by M.G.

My father was a bartender in the 1940s in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA. He worked at the Tropics Nightclub, Don the Beachcombers in Hollywood and Palm Springs.

He compiled an autograph book with over 45 stars, such as Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Lana Turner, Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre, Buddy Rogers, Mary Pickford and so many more. Many have personal notes to my father and some are dated. I'm interested in what the value might be.. Thank you... M.G.

Vintage Hollywood 1940s Autograph Book

The value of the book is contingent on the rest of the autographs that you didn't list. Just the seven that you did name makes the book valuable. Your Bela Lugosi autograph is the most valuable of the ones you mentioned. Most dealers would list it between $400 - $500. If he inscribed it with something personal or witty, it is worth even more.

Your second most valuable autograph is Peter Lorre. His signature is worth between $125 and $150. Lorre was a character actor who often stole the scenes he was in. Collectors want him in their collections primarily because of his role in Casablanca. He also had memorable roles in The Man Who Knew Too Much and The Maltese Falcon.

Bing Crosby was the biggest star in entertainment during his peak years, but today his signature is worth only $50.

Likewise, Mary Pickford was the biggest star of silent movies and a mover and shaker in the film industry, but her autograph is worth just $50. Buddy Rogers was a well known actor and jazz musician in his time, but today he is known as Mary Pickford's last husband. His autograph is worth $20.

Lana Turner was a major star in the 1940s - 1950s. She closed her career out in the nighttime TV soap opera Falcon Crest with another former star of the big screen, Jane Wyman. Her autograph is worth about $40.
