Track and Field Autographs 1969

by Brian Feltovich
(Park City, UT)

I found some sheets of notebook paper with autographs I collected at an international track and field event held at the LA Coliseum in summer of 1969 when I was a kid at a summer camp at USC.

Names include Frank Shorter, Bob Beamon, Marty Liquori, and Steve Prefontaine. Also some Russians and Americans whose names I don't recognize. Even a couple of LA newscasters.

Is this worth anything?

Track and Field Autographs

Track and field doesn't get the media attention that other spots enjoy, but it does have its fans and collectors who seek out the autographs of the big names, and you do have some of the biggest.

Frank Shorter, Bob Beamon, and Marty Liquori signatures are worth $15 - $20. Signed trading cards, magazine covers and photos are affordable, so most collectors gravitate towards those, rather than simple signatures.

Of the names that you mentioned, Steve Prefontaine is the one with the most collectible value. He died young at 24 in a car accident and anything signed by him is in high demand. A signature is worth $200 - up. Autographs on magazines and photos are beyond the reach of many collectors, so they settle for a signature.

Collections like yours sometimes sell for more than the sum of the parts.
