For those who aren't familiar with the Three Stooges, here is a short version of their story.

The Three Stooges are one of the most well known comedy acts, and arguably the most successful, in American history. They began as a vaudeville act behind leader Ted Healy in 1925 and were made up of two brothers, Moe and Shemp Howard and friend Larry Fine. Friction between the Stooges and Healy eventually led Shemp to quit in 1932. He was replaced by younger brother Curly Howard, who eventually became the most popular of the Stooges.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer signed Healy and The Stooges in 1933. At MGM, the Stooges made successful slapstick comedic shorts and feature films. After splitting with Healy in 1934, the Stooges signed with MGM as their own entity, now officially "The Three Stooges." During the filming of "Half Wits Holiday" in 1946, Curly suffered a major stroke and was unable to perform again. Shemp rejoined the trio to replace his brother, and the Stooges made 76 more shorts.

The Stooges also filmed a TV show pilot, which was never picked up by a network. In 1955, Shemp died of a heart attack and was replaced by Joe Besser in 1956. Besser completed 16 shorts with the Stooges, but by this time the Stooges career was thought to be coming to an end, because television was on the upswing and movie shorts was on the downswing. But instead of the demise of the Stooges, TV gave them a second life when their old movie shorts were aired on regional kiddie shows.

By this time Curly Joe DeRita had replaced Joe Besser as the third Stooge. This Stooge lineup starred in several successful movies, with children as the target audience. The Three Stooges were used to promote everything from coloring books to pogo sticks. They were merchandising giants, and the name "Three Stooges" is still very marketable today. The original Three Stooges merchandise that has survived until today are valuable collectibles, priced beyond the reach of many, but new products come on the market each year and many collectors want it all.
