Team Photo Autographed by Dale Earnhardt Sr. & Richard Childress

In 1997 (I think) I worked at Ellis Race Cars in Fortville, IN. Practice for the Brickyard 400 was taking place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At that time, Ellis was the closest distributor for G&G Oil which was providing racing fuel to the track. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was practicing and running low on fuel. Someone called Ellis and asked that a barrel of racing fuel be delivered to Earnhardt. Of course everyone in the shop fought over who got to take it and I was one of the two winners.

We took the fuel to the track, right to the garage. We were introduced to Richard Childress. Dale was out on the track, so Childress asked us to feel free to stay until he came in to the garage so we could meet him. Of course we did. So that day I met THE MAN, Dale Earnhardt Sr.! I was given a team photo which Richard Childress & Dale Earnhardt signed right then and there. I have no picture that was taken that day and have not had the autographs authenticated. If they were authenticated, how much would that picture be worth?

eam Photo Autographed by Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Childress
by: Bill

That's a good autographed photo to have. Like most NASCAR drivers, Dale Earnhardt was very fan-friendly. He signed through the mail, even while he was NASCAR's top driver. There are tens of thousands of Earhardt autographs in collections, but most people who own them want to keep them. Couple that with the fact that he died at a young age, while still a very successful racer, and it becomes a case of demand exceeding supply.

Prices have went down some since the months following his death, but prices are again rising and will continue to do so. It's nice that you have Richard Childress' autograph on the photo - that may or may not increase the value of the photo, depending on who is in the pool of buyers at the time it is for sale.

A Dale Earnhardt signed photo is currently worth about $150. A Richard Childress signed photo is worth about $30. So on the same photo $150 - $200 is a reasonable range.

If it were my photo I wouldn't bother to have it authenticated unless I planned to sell it - even then, it might not be worth the cost because Dale Earnhardt had a very distinctive autograph, and collectors usually do not have a problem separating the good from the bad.

Again if it were mine, I'd hang onto it. Its a good souvenir with good investment potential. Not often does one have that.

If you do plan on selling it, documents proving you were working for a company that provided racing fuel during the time you got the photo signed is the next best thing to a photo of the autographing.
