Look! Up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Superman. And, everything Superman has thought, touched, said and flown over (or under) has been a must for collectors for decades.

At the height of the Great Depression, writer Jerry Siegel teamed with Joe Shuster, and the Man of Steel was created. In 1938, Superman made his debut in “Action Comics No. 1,” and that comic is one of the most valuable collectibles in history. Superman got his own comic book a year later, and the superhero from the Planet Krypton set a new standard for bravery, heroic deeds and journalism (as his alter-ego, the mild mannered Clark Kent) that lasts today.

Making his way from Kansas (where he landed after being rocketed to earth as his planet was being destroyed) to Metropolis, the world couldn’t get enough of Superman. He has starred in movies, TV series, radio serials, graphic novels, newspaper strips and elsewhere. DC comics added other characters, too, including Supergirl, Superboy, and even Krypto the Superdog.

The original Superman TV series with George Reeves lasted six seasons and was way ahead of its time in special effects. The plots still hold up, and the episodes (some black-and-white and some in color) still delight audiences today. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson were forever grateful, as one or both was saved at least weekly.

Another fan favorite is “The Superman Guide To Life: Living the Super Hero Lifestyle,” a funny and clever manual for those who aspire to leap off tall buildings, be virtuous, loyal and super-powerful, and even has a collection of famous Superman comic covers displayed on magnets. For those aspiring to be this heroic, there are soundtracks from the various movies. Fans gravitate to the original soundtrack, “Superman: Doomsday,” a unique CD not for those who just feel like gliding above the fruited plains.

Name a Superman item, and someone covets and collects it. There are puzzles, radio scripts, greatest adventure archives, posters, T-shirts, and, to show how up-to-do a superhero can be, Superman hoodies featuring the classic logo.

The fact that Superman is over 80 years old helps assure that almost all collectors will be able to find something special that relates to their own Superman experiences and memories. Up, up and away! Superman gifts never go out of style.
