Stepin Fechit Autograph

by Charmagne Westcott
(Boise, Idaho)

I have a postcard from 1954 with an image of Stepin Fechit, a horse (or mule) and a white man in a hat. There is some text at the bottom that is hard to read, but I think it says "FOX" and "David" something. It appears to have an autograph in blue ink. It states, "To Mrs. Lynch" (my mother) and "Stepin Fechit 1954?"

Any idea how much it is worth or how I could go about selling it?

Thanks for your help!

Stepin Fetchit (real name: Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry) was the first black actor to receive a screen credit and the first black actor to become a millionaire. In his early film roles he always played the same role - the laziest man in the world. As the civil rights movement began to get traction, he was vilified by its leaders. He was for the most part finished as an actor by the 1940s, but did appear in occasional movies all the way into the 1970s.

He appeared in a total of 54 films, beginning in 1925. His early movie persona became so controversial that he was edited out of some of his movies when they were played on TV. He died in 1985.

A signed photo of Stepin Fetchit is worth about $200. Collectors of black memorabilia include it in their collections, and there are collectors who specialize in black cinema history. Like Amos 'n' Andy, in the last decade he has gained a lot of respect for being a truly gifted comedian.
