Paul Newman Autograph

I was working security at a race track. I was in a tunnel where the drivers would pass through. A car pulled up and it had to stay next to me for a few minutes. It was Paul Newman and his wife. I know he doesn't sign anything, but anyway I asked him if he would sign my CART race cap. His wife rolled her eyes. He said OK, but I had to put it away and not say anything. I showed it to my best buddy and then put it away for safe keeping. What is it worth?

Paul Newman Autograph
by: Bill

You are right. Paul Newman rarely signed autographs. Very few celebrities hated signing more than he did. I assume that his wife who did the eye-rolling was Joanne Woodward. Newman and Woodward were married for fifty years. Woodward was an accomplished actress, and she was actually very good about signing autographs. Maybe she was rolling her eyes because she knew how much her husband hated signing for you.

You have a unique item. Newman had a long association with racing and became quite good at it. It was his starring roll in the movie Winning that piqued his interest in the sport. So your race cap does have relevance.

Paul Newman is a hard to find autograph. A signature is worth $200. A signed photo is worth about $500. Your cap should fall into that range somewhere near the middle.
