Opera Autographs

by Lucinda Maxey

My husband and I collect classical vocal vinyl. We have lots of things that are signed and I suppose that before we die, we should really find out the value of things in that collection.

Recently, we picked up an old book (1938) published by the Met Opera Guild. Inside the book are a few programs from recitals performed in Tacoma, WA. Most are signed by the performer. Only one has a date, 1940.

We have Marjorie Lawrence, Marion Anderson, tenor Jan Kiepura, Patrice Munsel with flutist Adelle Lasker, conductor Georges Barrere, pianist Alexander Brahowsky, dancer Carmen Amaya with Antonis Amaya, Lola Montes and guitarist Antonio Triana, pianist Robert Casadesus, and Lily Pons. All of these are autographs on the program.

I have not seen much on the internet about these types of collectibles. Can you give me some advice as to where to go to determine values?

Your autographs have value. There are collectors who would like them, but since you enjoy the music, it might make sense just to just keep them with your vinyl collection. Buy some mylar sleeves to protect the programs.

Here are retail estimates for the names that I could find:

Marjorie Lawrence - $15
Marion Anderson - $100
Jan Kiepura - $40
Patrice Munsel - $10
Alexander Brahowsky - $50
Robert Casadesus - $45
Lily Pons - $40

Those values are for simple signatures. The programs are going to add value to the autographs.
