Mel Blanc Autograph on Cel Lithograph

Mel Blanc Signed Animation Cel

Mel Blanc Signed Animation Cel

I purchased this cel lithograph on Ebay about 6 years ago. It's a cel of Bugs Bunny coming out of a sack (I wish I knew which show the lithograph was from but I do not know.)

It is signed by Mel Blanc. It also says "Eh, What's Up Doc? 'Bugs Bunny'" which he wrote right above his name.

I bought this from an Art Studio in California. The appraised value listed on the COA is $3000.00. It was appraised in July of 2003.

I am wanting to sale this piece as I am no longer keeping my Bugs Bunny collection and am interested in hearing about how much this autograph would cost.

Mel Blanc Autograph on Cel Lithograph
by: Bill

It is the original animation production cels that collectors usually pay the highest prices for. If yours is a limited edition, it is probably not going to fetch anywhere near $3000. Most Warner Brothers original production cels can be bought for less than that.

A Mel Blanc autograph probably wouldn't add any value to an original production cel, but it probably does add value to your limited edition. How much it adds, I can't be sure because prices for limited editions like yours are all over the place, really dependent on who sees it when the owner decides to sell.

Limited edition cels like yours are usually sold in galleries, often in touristy-type places when people buy on impulse (Las Vegas, Disney World etc.) Many of those limited editions, bought over the last couple decades, have ended up on eBay and have sold at drastically reduced prices from what the original owner paid.

Prices for signed Mel Blanc photos are more stable. Most of them picture Blanc surrounded by cartoon characters which he voiced. Dealers usually list them at $200 - $250. They often show up on eBay and close at about half that, sometimes less.

Thank you Bill for you quick comment! You were very helpful!

I'm not real sure about whether this is original or limited edition. I do know that there are no numbers anywhere on the cel, e.g. 100/210.

It is very helpful still to know that his autograph doesn't add much more value that what the cel would be worth to begin with. I appreciate your time and input!

Mel Blanc Autograph

The main reason I jumped to the conclusion that it was a limited edition was the word "lithograph." Lithography is a printing process that produces prints of an original.

But as you said, most animated limited editions are numbered.

I think the first item on your agenda should be to verify that the autograph of Mel Blanc is authentic.

Blancs Autograph on Cell
by: Anonymous

Mel Blancs autograph is easily obtained, he signed tons of stuff and lots of cels. His signature isn't worth much and does not up the value of the cel significantly. The fact that he signed your cel is a bonus to some collectors and a annoyance to others.

I'm a collector of Warner material and I find the signature to be messy, distracting and invasive. The cel itself looks to be original, with a little research I could probably pinpoint the cartoon it came from. But it's not worth $3000, not even close. In the $3000 range I can acquire much nicer (and more significant) works of vintage animation art.
