Julian Hawthorne Autographed Book

I have obtained a ten volume set first edition of The Literature of All Nations, History, Character and Incident signed by the main author/editor Julian Hawthorne.

The entire set has an inked autograph on every title page of each of the ten books, which I am assuming was printed by machine; but the first volume has his picture and a couple of words I can not make out and then his signature in pencil underneath the two words.

The ten volume set is in almost pristine condition. Any info you can give me is appreciated.
