John Lennon Signed My 5 Dollar Tip

by Tommy Contino
(New Jersey)

Many years ago I was delivering furniture for a living. One day I was asked to deliver a white leather chair to the Dakota. I almost flipped when I saw that the chair had been purchased by Yoko.

My helper and I were led into a huge apartment entirely decorated in white from the piano to the carpet to the couch and curtains...everything was white.

In the living room arranged around a glass coffee table were four mannequins dressed only in hats, gloves and shoes. They were having tea.

A young man (assistant, butler?) showed us where to place the chair and signed our paperwork.

I asked if John was home and if I could meet him. I was told yes he was home but no, I could not meet him. We were given a five dollar tip and sent on our way.

That night at home I wrote a letter, put the five dollars in an envelope and mailed it back to the Dakota asking for an autograph. I received the bill back in a couple of weeks signed by John. I have never had it checked to see if is real because it a real John Lennon autograph to me.

It was a great experience and a story I have been telling for over thirty years.

Thanks for that great story. Good that you thought to send a note asking for the autograph. John was actually pretty good about meeting his fans when he was out and about. He must have been having one of his bad Dakota days.
