John Lennon and George Harrison Autographs

by John
(Orlando, Florida)

I have an autographed b&W picture of the Beatles from 1964 that my neighbor Julie gave me in 1965 when I was 10 years old. She said her cousin got the autographs at the airport in NY or Chicago (don't know why I remember Chicago as a possibility) when the Beatles arrived.

When John Lennon made his statement about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, I put the picture in the trashcan in my bedroom. It stayed there for weeks before I pulled it out and put it in a safe place, a school yearbook. I would find it from time to time whenever I moved because handling the yearbook would remind me and I would take a peek at it.

Now with a family of my own and living in Orlando, Florida, I forgot about it completely until recently when it fell out of a Glen Oaks Junior High yearbook. It has been there for over 40 years.

Did I mention that the only two signatures on the photo is John and George, which is eerie to say the least. I figure it has to be real because of the time frame and the fact that we were all so young and innocent at the time and no one thought to make copies in those days. I am not sure the technology was there even if someone wanted to. It has been stashed away for so long.

Anyway, I placed it in a sleeve that is good for items like this, and I put it in our safe at home. I have kept it so long I hate to think of parting with it, but I should find out what it is worth. I am getting older and don't know if I will be able to find it next time. I will send a picture of it when my wife gets home from soccer practice with my son. I just found your website and she has the combination.

John and George

I had to send a scan of the autographed photo in another document. I don't know how it will show up on the website.

That's a nice story. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see a scan of the photo.

The photo could have been signed in either New York or Chicago. They played both cities on their first American tour in 1965.

A lot of Beatles autographs were burned in 1965. Some radio stations refused to play the group's records, and some of them sponsored bonfires so that kids could burn their records and memorabilia.

Actually John Lennon wasn't criticizing Christ, he was criticizing some Christians twisting what Jesus said. But that message was lost in the noise. It didn't take long for the radio stations to start playing Beatles records again, but those autographs tossed in the bonfires were gone forever. I'm glad you pulled yours out of the trashcan.

The fact that there are only two autographs on the photo makes it more plausible that the autographs are authentic. As the group was moving through airports and hotel lobbies, they weren't taking a lot of time to sign. Getting one or two autographs of the Beatles in 1964 was a lot easier than getting all four.

Most of the group's autographs from 1964 are on scraps of paper and autograph books. Autographs on memorabilia is relatively rare and more valuable.

The technology to copy photos existed back then, but it is unlikely that the photo that you have owned for over forty years is a copy. The Beatles were beyond popular in 1964, but their autographs were not valuable. They were treasured as keepsakes. Monetary value was irrelevant, so who would have went to the trouble to have copies made?

Of the four, John Lennon and George Harrison are the most valuable for obvious reasons.

A signed John Lennon photo is worth between $3500 - $4000.

A signed George Harrison photo is worth $1500 - $2000.

The two autographs on one photo is going to carry a premium. Your photo could be worth as much as $7500. Beatles autographs are blue chip investments.
