Joe DiMaggio 1968 Tamarac Country Club Score Card

by John Letter
(Tamarac Florida)

Tamarac Country Club is about a half a mile west of Ft. Lauderdale Yankee Stadium... or at least it was in 1968 when the Yankees had spring training there. I was 12 years old at the time and my father, who also worked nearby, was having a drink in the clubhouse lounge when he saw Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle enjoying a drink. He approached them and asked Joe if he would give his son an autograph. Joe obliged and wrote on a scorecard "to John, best wishes, Joe DiMaggio. My father who is 86 now regrets to this day that he didn't get the Mick to sign it also.

Joe DiMaggio

I understand why he would regret not asking Mantle to sign. He was as famous as DiMaggio, probably more so at that time, and he probably wondered why he wasn't asked.

The Joe DiMaggio autograph is worth about $150. If Mickey Mantle had signed his autographed would be worth close to twice that.

Later in life, both of them were reluctant to sign in public unless they were paid, especially DiMaggio.
