Jason Heyward and the Atlanta Braves Country Caravan
The Atlanta Braves Country Caravan of 2011 made 25 stops in across the Southeast, traveling over 3,000 miles. My son is a baseball fan with a massive collection of autographs. Unfortunately, he couldn't make any of the stops because he is living in Salt Lake, Utah. Several weeks before the caravan was scheduled to stop in Hoover, Alabama, he asked me if I would make the 20 minute ride to Academy Sports, just as I had done last year. This year he especially wanted the autograph of Jason Heyward. Kris Medlen, Terry Pendleton, Terry Harper and Jason Heyward were scheduled to sign from 4:00 to 5:30 P.M on January 26. That had been a very busy day for me, and I couldn't get to Academy until 20 minutes prior. I think last year I had arrived no more than 30 minutes early, and that was fine. It only took me about twenty minutes to get to the signing table. I knew this year would be different as soon as I saw the shopping center. It was packed with cars. Then I saw the line. Last year I walked directly into the store. This year there was a line to get into the store. I snapped photos of the line in front and behind me. It took me about an hour to get inside the store. It was cold outside, and I was happy to get indoors. Once inside however I was dismayed to see that the signing table was not just inside the door. It was on the opposite side of the store, just as it had been last year. The line snaked all over the store, up and down aisles. It was announced that the players had begun signing twenty minutes late, so the signing would be extended a little longer. It was also announced that the caravan was on a tight schedule and autographs for all in line couldn't be guaranteed. I thought "No kidding, they'd be here until sunrise getting to all who are in line." Since I had already been in line an hour and half, I decided that I might as well see how far up the line I could get. The kids in line loved Homer. This kid was camera shy. I eventually came to the conclusion that for me to get to the front of the line, the players would have to forget about their "tight schedule" and stay just for me. Since there was zero possibility of that happening, I left the line to get photos of the players. Terry Harper, Terry Pendleton, Kris Medlen, Jason Heyward Terry Pendleton Jason Heyward
