Jack Dempsey Signed Menu
I found this Jack Dempsey signed menu in a box of photos from my mother's estate. I'm curious about its value. It is inscribed to my Great Aunt Hulda. She and her husband were quite the travelers and hob-knobbed with all sorts of celebrities. I have no idea where they may have connected with Mr. Dempsey.
It is from the Broadway Bar and Cocktail Lounge, New York. The signature is dated 1940.
Most likely your aunt and her husband met Jack Dempsey at the restaurant. He owned the business. He opened it in 1935 and frequented it until he closed it in 1974. During those four decades, Dempsey signed thousands of placemats, menus, business cards, napkins and whatever else a visitor could find quickly when word got around that the owner was on the premises.
That is a very nice signed piece that you own. Dealers would probably list it at $300+. Most collectors of boxing memorabilia would love to have it in their collection.
