J Edgar Hoover JFK Letter

I have a letter from the office of J Edgar Hoover that was sent to my grandfather weeks after the Kennedy assassination in Dallas. My grandfather was a B-52 bomber wing commander out of Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, TX.

He authorized a B-52 to fly the FBI and Oswald’s rifle to D.C. for forensic examination. The content is short and sweet thanking him for his assistance. It mentions it was related to the presidential assassination.

The signature is in blue ink. I’m not sure if it’s a stamped signature or done by a secretary. The paper has watermarks and id’s his office on the letterhead.

If Hoover mentioned the assassination, the letter is historically significant. The value of this letter is in the Kennedy association. It has value beyond the signature, assuming the signature is authentic. If the signature is not authentic, collectors of JFK memorabilia are still going to want it-- they just won't pay as much. It's really impossible to put a value on something like this. There are too many variables.

If this were a part of family history, I wouldn't sell it. I'd still be curious about value and the authenticity of the signature though.

I think the best route for estimating value is to contact a John F Kennedy or presidential memorabilia collector. You can find them on the Internet.
