Harper Lee Signed Book, Personal Letter & Photo

by Beth Anne
(Scottsdale, AZ)

In 1965, while my father served in the West Point English Department--he was a USMA graduate and retired decades later as a BG--he had the privilege of escorting Miss Harper Lee during her visit as a guest speaker.

In return, Miss Lee gave my father a personalized signed copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. Shortly thereafter, she mailed him a hand-written thank you note. I have both the book and letter, as well as a couple of official USMA photos of Miss Lee during her talk, with my father clearly seated just behind.

I'm very curious of the monetary value of this collection, i.e. the personalized signed book, hand-written letter, and photos. Would you be so kind as to share with me your expert opinion based on this brief description?

Thank you, in advance, for your time.

It isn't possible to estimate a value for the signed book. The value is contingent on too many factors. A first edition of the original printing could be worth $25,000 - $30,000. Search the Internet for rare book dealers and they could give you an estimate for the book that you have based on the criteria that they use.

The thank you note is also difficult to estimate. A letter signed by Harper Lee is worth $600. A letter with unique content is worth more. A thank you note could be more as much as a routine letter, especially if it is a part of a package like you have.

The main value of the photos is the extra layer of credibility that it gives to the autographs.

Get in touch with some rare book dealers. They will be happy to hear from you.
