Great Ormond Street Benefits from Michael Jackson Memorabilia Auction
by Stanley Gibbons
(UK)
As fans mourn and others profit from the death of a legend, Fraser’s Autographs auctioned their last remaining item of Michael Jackson memorabilia for charity.
Within hours of his death hitting the news headlines, Fraser’s had sold every last item of Michael Jackson memorabilia – it wasn’t until a week after his death that they managed to acquire just one solitary item – a signed CD sleeve from the album, 'Off the Wall', which helped launch his solo career.
Fraser’s Autographs, a division of the world famous stamp dealers Stanley Gibbons, held a three day online auction for the CD sleeve, notifying both investors and fans around the world that proceeds from the auction would be donated to one of Michael’s favourite charities: the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The winning bidder, Mr PG from Frankfurt am Main, Germany, paid a fantastic £2400 for the item.
He said "His music revolutionised my generation and his entertainment from Thriller onwards changed the way music was 'seen'.”
Fraser’s catalogue, Collect Autographs, lists a signed photograph of Michael Jackson as being worth £300 prior to his death- in the few short weeks since, fans have paid tens of thousands of pounds for items such as childhood drawings and notes written by the star- a crystal studded shirt worn by him onstage achieved $52,500 at a recent auction in Las Vegas.
About the investment potential, Mr PG said: "I’m certainly not looking for a quick buck but maybe a decent inflation hedge."
