Gone with the Wind Autographs
Gone With the Wind is certainly one of the most popular films of all time. Some would argue that it is the best movie of all time. It won ten Oscars in 1939, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Vivian Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel), and Best Director (Victor Fleming). Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable
Vivien Leigh (Scarlet O'Hara, 1913-1967) and Clark Gable (Rhett Butler, 1901-1960) were the two main stars of the movie and their autographs are the two most collected of the cast members. A signed photo of Leigh sells in the neighborhood of $600 - $700 and a signature sells for around $400. The value of a signed Gable photo is in the range of $900 - $1,000 and a signature brings around $350. Signed photos of Leigh or Gable in their "Gone With the Wind" roles are more valuable, especially Leigh as Scarlet O'Hara. A Wide Range of Values Hattie McDaniel (Mammy, 1895-1952) is a valuable autograph. Signed photos usually fetch more than $2,000. Signatures sell for $500 - $600. Butterfly McQueen (Prissy, 1911-1995) lived into old age and she was a responsive signer, so her autograph is one of the more inexpensive key autographs. Signed photos sell for around $100 and signatures sell for $50 - $75. Some of her bank checks are on the market and they sell for around $40. Olivia DeHavilland (Melanie, 1916- ) is still living at 92. Her autograph is inexpensive. A signed photo might bring around $100 and a signature would sell for $25. Leslie Howard (Ashley Wilkes, 1893-1943) is a valuable autograph partly because he was killed in a plane crash soon after the movie was released. A signed photo goes for about $600 and a signature could be bring $350 - $450. Thomas Mitchell (Gerald O'Hara, 1892-1962) was a good signer while alive, but his autograph has grown quite scarce. Expect to pay around $500 for a photo and half that for a signature. Two Minor Cast Members Who Became TV Stars One other GWTW autograph that is pretty tough to acquire is George Reeves (1914-1959), who played Stuart Tarleton, one of the Tarleton Twins. (He is incorrectly credited as Brent Tarleton). The price of his autograph is driven more by his role as TV's Superman than it is by GWTW, but no doubt one pushes the other. He also died at the young age of forty-five. Signed pictures are very rare and usually bring more than $1500 and about half that for a signature. Eddie "Rochester" Anderson (Uncle Peter, 1905-1977) is another cast member who gained greater recognition outside of Gone with the Wind. He later became well-known as Jack Benny's sidekick. His signed photos bring around $150 and his signatures fetch around $50.
