The Autographs of Jim Davis - the Creator of Garfield the Cat
Jim Davis was working for an advertising agency when he began assisting Tom Ryan with his comic strip, Tumbleweeds. While working on Tumbelweeds, he created a comic strip called Gnorm Gnat that ran for five years in The Pendleton Times, an Indiana newspaper. Davis had a desire to go national with his strip, but a comic strip about bugs was a hard sell, even though he was told his art and wit were great.
Davis began thinking of a new character. He believed the world already had enough cartoons with dogs as the central character. His family had 25 cats on their farm, and he knew that there were just as many cat lovers as dog fans. From that knowledge, he created Garfield, a lazy, cynical cat who loves lasagna. On June 19, 1978, Garfield began syndication in 41 newspapers. Today, 2400 newspapers carry the strip, and the total readership is estimated to be 200 million. Oddly enough, the Davis family does not own a cat. His wife is allergic to them. In 1998, my daughter sent Jim Davis a letter, requesting an autograph. He sent her a nice signed note on Garfield stationary and three Garfield autographed cards. Garfield the Cat on eBay
