Collecting the Autographs of Explorers

Collecting the autographs of 20th century explorers is educational and fun. The fact is that, excluding space exploration, the list of those who actually charted new territory is very small. The list is going to include those who went where it was very cold (Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, Robert Peary, Richard Byrd and Sir Vivian Fuchs), very deep (Jacques Cousteau, Jacques Piccard, and Robert Ballard), or very high (Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay).

Go back to the 19th century and the autographs of those who were charting new territory get very expensive. The autograph of Meriwether Lewis would cost the collector between $2500 and $3,000, and that's just for a signature.

Go back to the Europeans who first trekked across America like Hernando DeSoto, Henry Hudson, and Ponce DeLeon and we're talking serious money.

... Which brings me back to the 20th century. Those autographs are within the budget of most collectors. Signatures of most, if not all, of those men will cost no more than $100. Signed books and letters can often be found for not much more.

That means that a comprehensive collection of "names" from the 20th century can be assembled without spending a lot of money. Over time that will be money well spent, assuming you don't overspend in the first place.
