Don Sutton Autograph Signing
The Braves Caravan 2010 made a visit to Academy Sports in Hoover, Alabama, on February 6. During the two weeks of the tour, the caravan will travel 3,000 miles and make forty different stops throughout the Southeast.
The players signing at the Hoover stop were Eric O'Flaherty, Clint Sammons, Craig Kimbreln and Hall of Famer Don Sutton. We arrived at the store thirty minutes early, and about two hundred people were already in line. By the time we got to the signing table, there was about another couple hundred behind us. The line moved fast, and the free autographs were limited to one each per player, per person. Signings like this one are a lot of fun. Talking to fans about their collections, some even have photos and autograph books with them, makes waiting in line very easy. Homer, the Braves Mascot, was there posing for pictures and acting silly. The players were very friendly, including Don Sutton. My son, who is a huge baseball fan with a massive collection of signed baseballs, says Sutton is not that friendly when approached away from organized signings. The website of Sutton's booking agent states that his signing fees range from $5,001 - $10,000. I think I could stay in a good mood if I was getting a paycheck like that for signing my name a few hundred times for a couple hours. I didn't see any of the players besides Sutton signing anything but the free Braves promotional items. Sutton was signing more baseballs than anything else, but I also saw him signing bats and jerseys.
