Scroll on down and take a look. The day in February, 2001, when people heard of the terrible crash that killed the legendary Dale Earnhardt, everything seemed to stand still. It was impossible to think that the record-holding, much-loved NASCAR driver was gone. Dale had been part of American pop culture, sports and television for more than a quarter century. He started 676 races and won 76 of them. He was the head of the DEI racing team, and his son was carrying on his tradition – and competing against him. The smile, dark glasses, mustache and #3 black car were part of weekends for years. There were the Southern accent, all that bravado, and everyone knew he was a contender. He was approaching 50 years old, but he didn’t look like it. He was a stock car racer for NASCAR, a winner of the Daytona 500, the guy the other drivers feared and the fans loved. The legend continues to grow. Dale Jr. carried on the winning tradition, and Jeffrey Earnhardt is now on the circuit, too. People still refer to him just as “Dale.” His oldest son is “Junior.” His memorabilia is as prized by fans and collectors as are his trophies by his family. It makes sense that Dale respected John Wayne, so there’s even an authentic Dale/John Wayne “Dale and the Duke” cap. Posters of his victories and his cars are very popular. Sam Bass, the first officially-licensed artist of NASCAR, did posters of both Dale and Junior. Dale’s celebrated racing, and Junior’s saluted the National Guard in 2008. Dale’s #3 makes a lot of memorabilia instantly identifiable. Items range from flying disks for days in the park with the dog, to hats, pendants, logo rings and leather wallets. There are even watches and dangle earrings for female fans with “3” on them. Junior drives #88, and unique collectibles with his number range from stadium chairs to flags. The only thing better than the Dale Earnhardt collectibles and memorabilia would be for Dale to still be racing. He’s still missed every weekend, every race.
