Collecting the Autographs of Cartoonists
The autographs and drawings of cartoonists are nice additions to an autograph collection. Saturday mornings in front of the TV are fond memories for most baby boomers. Many of us turn to the comic strips before we read the front page of our newspaper. Many of our cultural icons are comic characters: Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson. Superman, Batman and Spiderman. The donkey and elephant of the Democrats and Republicans. Even the modern image of Santa Claus. I have found these artists to be very generous with their time. I have received many "through the mail" original sketches from notable artists, free of charge. Mort Walker drew me a sketch of Beetle Bailey. Marcus Hamilton drew me a sketch of Dennis the Menace. I received a large original drawing of Nancy from Guy Gilchrist. Jack Bender & Dave Graue sent me an autographed photo of the two of them holding an Alley Oop comic strip. My daughter asked Jim Davis for an autograph. He sent her a nice letter and card on "Garfield the Cat" stationary. There are many avenues to pursue this branch of the autograph hobby. There are so many nice things available that a collector could spend all of his time and funds just collecting this field. Two things are certain: the big names will always be collectible. The lesser names are cheap enough to have fun with.
