Burgess Meredith Signed Letter

by Anne Ettinger
(Flat Rock, NC)

I have a letter written by Burgess Meredith in reply to a letter sent to him by a young girl in the 1950s. It is typed, with a number of strike overs where errors were made. It is signed by Mr. Meredith. It belonged to a friend of mine who died last year. I found it in her papers. Is there a market for this letter? What value do you think it might have? Thanks, Anne Ettinger

Burgess Meredith Signed Letter
by: Bill

Burgess Meredith appeared in several roles on TV and in the movies that have a huge fan base. Collectors of Batman memorabilia want his autograph in their collections because of his role as the Penguin in the campy 1960s TV series Batman.

He was one of only two actors to play in four episodes of the Twilight Zone (Jack Klugman was the other). He starred in one of the most popular episodes of the Twilight Zone - he was the henpecked book loving bank teller, Mr. Henry Bemis in "Time Enough at Last." Bemis was the only man on Earth to survive an atomic war, and he was OK with this because now he had all the time in the world to read books. His bliss was short-lived though because he broke his glasses and couldn't read anything.

Burgess is probably most well known today for his role as Rocky Balboa's trainer in the the Rocky movies.

Most collectors prefer Burgess Meredith autographs on photos from the Twilight Zone, Batman and Rocky.

A signed letter is worth about $40 at retail. If the letter has great content it could be worth more - a letter that mentions his Twilight Zone role, for example.

The strike overs don't affect the value much, if any, as long as the leader is readable.
