Autographed Photos of Sammy Davis Jr., Henry Winkler, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffmann and MASH

When I was a teenager I was a celebrity buff. I'd write letters to celebrities and got a few autographed pictures sent to me. I have Sammy Davies Jr., Henry Winkler, the cast of MASH, Dustin Hoffmann and Paul Newman's. Paul Newman's looks like a stamped signature but the photos of Henry Winkler, Sammy Davis and Dustin Hoffmann are personalized to me, so that may diminish the value to a buyer.

I also have a Joan River's autobiography that was personally signed by her. I know because I went to a book signing and she signed it; however, it's personalized also.

Any idea on the value of these items and how I could go about selling them? I'm not the buff I once was.

If necessary I could take pictures and upload them if you need me to.

Paul Newman didn't sign through the mail, so you almost certainly do not have an authentic autograph. Signed photos of Newman are hard to find. Nice ones sell for $500+.

You probably don't have authentic autographs on the MASH cast photo. The cast didn't sign routine autograph requests through the mail. If you did have one, this would be another $500 item. Alan Alda has never been a friendly signer. David Ogden Stiers (if he is on the photo) is an even tougher autograph.

The Dustin Hoffman photo could be authentic, but it probably isn't. Most of his "through the mails" have been pre-prints or secretarials. If it is authentic, it is worth about $75.

If you sent the autograph request to Henry Winkler during the Happy Days run, the photo probably doesn't have an authentic autograph. During his time on Happy Days, few celebrities have ever received as much fan mail. He was deluged with autograph requests - most of the envelopes addressed to "The Fonz." An authentically signed photo is worth in the $35 - $50 range, depending on the photo. Since Happy Days, he has usually been a responsive signer.

You could possibly have an authentic Sammy Davis Jr. autograph. Davis was one one of the most talented performers in the history of show business. He could have signed authentically through the mail on occasion, but more likely you either have a secretarial or a preprint. There are a lot of those in the marketplace. If it is authentic, it is worth about $250, and values continue to rise.

The Joan Rivers book is probably worth $15 - $25, and might be a hard sell at that, especially with the inscription.

An inscription doesn't take away from the value of authentically signed Sammy Davis Jr or Paul Newman photos. The more valuable the autograph, generally the less inscriptions matter. Some collectors actually prefer inscriptions (the more writing the better).

It is not difficult to get authentic autographs through the mail, but it is very difficult if the celebrity is very popular at the moment. Catch them "on the way up" or "on the way down."

Regarding selling them, search the net for dealers, and ask if you can send scans. Dealers would be very happy to have an authentic Davis, Newman, and MASH. They will not pay the amounts that I quoted - those are estimates of what they would charge at retail.
