1978 Red Sox Baseball

In 1978, as a senior in high school, I was invited by my friend Westy to visit and play alongside the Red Sox during training camp in Florida for five days. It was just amazing to play in the outfield and infield with a major league team.

At the end of the five days, the Red Sox organization gave me a baseball and told me to go and get the guys to sign. Everyone I asked signed. Just to mention a few, Jim Rice, Fredy Lynn, Louis Tiant, Dwight Evan, Jerry Remy and Ted Williams (batting coach at the time). And just a note: No one touched Ted's signature on the ball. What respect the players had for him.

The only two signatures I didn't get on it was Carl Yastrzemski (His wife was in hospital and he had to leave really quick.) and George Scott (He lost a bet with Ted about losing weight over the winter).

I was wondering what my 1978 Red Sox Baseball is Worth? Yaz and George Scott not on ball.

That's a nice story. I'm sure the ball brings back great memories every time that you look at it.

Most of the names that you mentioned are worth $30 each on their own ball. To get a ballpark figure for all the signatures on the one ball, I would add them up and multiply them by about half of the $30 - or $15. (Some of the autographs aren't going to be worth $30.)

Then we get to the Ted Williams signature. A Ted Williams signed ball is worth $375 - $400. His signature is worth less on a ball with other signatures, but anything signed by Ted Williams is valuable. A simple signature is worth $175 - $200. I would add $200 for the Williams signature to the total.

There's no rules, no guidelines, for valuing what you have, but if I were offering it for sale, that's how I would value it.

If I had the story behind the ball that you have, it would be one of the last things that I would sell, maybe the last.
